No owner. No operator. No margin.

We were founded by a small group of boating families in 1947 and we still run the place ourselves. Dues go back into the docks, the pool, and the grounds, which is why our numbers look the way they do.

What it costs

Membership is $3,564 a year, plus a slip fee of about $2,200 to $5,300 for most boats. We do have some smaller slips available for around $600; please inquire. A $500 deposit with your application holds an available slip and is fully refundable.

What's here

A 50-foot pool with a lifeguard, a clubhouse and ballroom, a fire pit, guest docks, grills on every dock, and a live-in manager on site year round.

Who's here

People who keep their boats here, bring their kids, stay for the barbecue, and cruise the Bay together once a month all summer.

The honest comparison

Around Annapolis it's a bare dock or a big check.

Annual boat slips on the South River, ten miles from Annapolis

72 in-water slips for power and sailboats from 30 to 80 feet, on 10-foot-wide piers in protected water just inside the mouth of the South River. Up to seven feet at mean low water toward the channel, shallower along the bulkhead. Water and electric at every slip, club wifi across the grounds and docks.

You're 615 yards from the end of the six-knot zone and a short run to open Bay. Two fuel docks are next door at Anchor Yacht Basin and Selby Bay Yacht Basin, so we don't need one.

What it costs

Membership and a slip go together here. You don't rent a slip from Selby Bay; you join the club and the slip comes with it. That is the whole difference between us and a marina.

Why the number is what it is

We're member-owned, so there's no margin built in. We're small, so there's no professional staff to carry beyond a live-in manager. And we review every application, which keeps the place the way members want it and means we've never needed to price people out.

It's not a catch. It's how a club this size stays a club.

Club life

Big enough for a crab feast. Small enough that you'll know who brought the crabs.

It's hard to walk down the docks on a weekend without stopping to talk to someone. So much more than a marina, Selby Bay is a place where members become friends quickly, not just people you nod to on the way to your boat.

As a member-operated club, we encourage everyone to get involved. That's where the sense of ownership comes from, and it's what makes the club feel like yours.

The pool

Fifty feet, lifeguarded, right off the clubhouse with the docks in view.

Weekends

Bagels and coffee in the clubhouse every Saturday and Sunday morning, 9 to 11, Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day. Grills on every dock for the afternoon. The fire pit for after.

The calendar

Our Entertainment Committee, with member volunteers and sponsors, puts together a full season: the Pool Party, a BBQ picnic on the grass, the Crab Feast, impromptu dock parties, and the Commodore's Ball in the ballroom for the one night a year you dress up. We eat well, we drink well, and we dance.

Club cruises

Somewhere different every month

Once a month during the summer, the club sets sail together for a different Chesapeake destination and spends the weekend: a raft-up, a beach, a good dinner, old friends and new ones.

The grounds

Landscaped and looked after. A picnic area under big old trees, a basketball court, a fenced dog run, and parking that's actually close to the docks. A restaurant across the street for nights nobody wants to cook.

The clubhouse

Members may reserve the clubhouse for private gatherings, subject to club rules and seasonal restrictions; contact the Vice Commodore. It is for members and member-sponsored events and is not offered as a public venue.

Beyond the club

Selby Bay is a member of the Chesapeake Bay Yacht Clubs Association and the Yachting Club of America, which means reciprocal privileges at member clubs up and down the Bay and beyond.

Come take a look first

The easiest way to know if this is your kind of place is to see it. Reach out to the membership chair, and he'll walk you down the docks, show you the pool and clubhouse, talk through what slips are open for your boat, and answer whatever you want to ask. Do that before you fill anything out.

How joining works

  1. VisitContact the membership chair and come see the club. Weekends are best; that's when everyone's around.
  2. ApplyThe application is online. It goes in with two sponsors, each a member for at least 18 months (if you don't know anyone yet, that's what the visit is for), and a $500 check to Selby Bay Yacht Club that holds an available slip and is fully refundable. The other $500 of the entrance fee is due on admission. Boats need to be over 23 feet. Bring checks to the club manager at 1116 Turkey Point Road, Edgewater, MD 21037.
  3. Member reviewUnder our by-laws, current members are told about every new application and have a week to look it over. Then the Board of Directors has a week to vote.
  4. Your slipSlips are assigned by the Rear Commodore, not the membership chair. When a slip opens, current members get first call on it by seniority; if nobody takes it, it goes to the next new member on the waiting list whose boat fits. That's why we can't promise a specific slip on a specific date, and why the deposit is refundable.
  5. Bring the boatBefore your vessel arrives, we need proof of insurance with at least $500,000 in coverage. First-year dues and slip fees are prorated. Then the Rear Commodore works out the logistics of getting you in.

About that review

Two sponsors, then two weeks of review, members then board, for every applicant. It's not a hurdle and it's not a club secret. It's the reason a place this affordable is still the kind of place you'd want to keep your boat. Everyone on the docks went through it, which is a big part of why everyone on the docks knows each other.
